Belgium: Brussels
Zaventem Airport (BRU)
BEST WAY DOWNTOWN: Train

BASICS
Zaventem is located 9 miles (14 km) north-northeast of the center of Brussels. A Belgian Tourist Office information desk is open from 8 A.M. to 9 P.M. weekdays; on weekends and holidays, the information desk closes at 8 P.M. Always open, however, is the airport Web site, which offers:

TAXI
There's always a line of taxis at the stand outside the terminal, so avoid the lone cabs that cruise the airport for business. The fare is around 1,200 Belgian francs ($31) and it will take 25-35 minutes to the Grande Place in the city center.

TRAIN
Good train service is available from the airport to the three main Brussels stations: Gare du Nord, Gare Centrale, and Gare du Midi. Travel time to each takes between 15 and 25 minutes. Tickets are sold at the kiosk in the terminal baggage claim area, or at the ticket window in the train station. Fare is about 80 Belgian francs ($2), and trains leave every 30 minutes from 5:30 A.M. until 11:45 P.M.

BUS
The bus station is located beneath the Arrivals Hall on the ground level. Hotel shuttles, charter buses, and tour coaches are available at the station. The Sabena Airport Express bus runs a shuttle to Antwerp every hour for a cost of about 250 Belgian francs ($6).

RENTAL CAR
Major European and American rental companies are in the airport, but if you're going to the center of Brussels a car is not advisable—traffic snarls and difficult navigation combine to create a harrowing driving experience.
